AIM OF THE SCHOOL

The Italian School of Astrophysics "Francesco Lucchin" and the
GREAT-ITN (GREAT-Gaia Research for European Astronomy Training) project
join together to organize an International School of Astrophysics on
the
Fundamental Cosmic distance scale and the Transient Sky.

The School of Astrophysics "Francesco Lucchin" is addressed to PhD
students in Astronomy and Physics, as well as to interested young
researchers. The school aims at providing a comprehensive background in
Astronomy and Astrophysics, from both a theoretical and an
observational
point of view.
The GREAT-ITN is a large network covering a wide range of distinct but
related research topics of the Gaia Mission, the European Space Agency
mission which will provide a stereoscopic census of our Galaxy through
the measurement of high accuracy astrometry, radial velocities and
multi-colour photometry. The GREAT-ITN offers unique opportunities for
collaborative research projects, by providing the PhD students with a
broad overview of the science topics covered by the network.
The main purpose of the school is to provide common cultural ground on
hot topics of research, both observational and theoretical, to young
astronomers. This will reveal the potential links between the various
projects in which the PhD students and young researchers are involved,
and encourage collaborative research for the future.

The school is open to students and young researchers of all backgrounds
(experimental, observational, theoretical).

TOPICS OF THE SCHOOL

Fundamental Cosmic Distance Ladder (Chair: Enzo Brocato)

The Distance Scale of the Universe
Astrometry using space and ground-based telescopes
The Key Role of Variable Stars as Primary Distance Indicators
Eclipsing Binaries: an Accurate and Precise Distance Indicator
Astronomical Distances using Stellar Evolution Theory
Population II distance indicators: Surface Brightness Fluctuations
and
Globular Clusters
   Supernova Cosmology
   Distances at the Hubble Limit

Transient Sky (Chair: Bruno Leibundgut)

   The Transient sky
   Cataclismic Variables
Progenitors and Theoretical Scenarios of SN Ia
Type Ia supernovae: Observational Characteristics and Rates
Progenitors and Theoretical Scenarios of SN II
Type II Supernovae: Observational Characteristics and Rates
   High Energy Transients: GRB
   Extragalactic Transients: AGN

There will be the possibility for students and young researchers to
present their scientific activity in short talks.

REGISTRATION AND DEADLINES

*******************************************************
The deadline for the registration is *15th April 2012
*******************************************************

Participants should register to the school by filling the on-line
registration form at http://isa2012.oa-teramo.inaf.it

Applicants will receive an e-mail confirming their registration. For
practical reasons the maximum number of participants will be 50. In
case
more people apply, priority will be given to PhD students.
Participants will have to confirm by *30th April 2012* that they will
attend the school.

The school fee is 400/500 € for double/single room. The fee includes
accommodation (from the 10th of June), breakfast and meals, social
dinner. Note that the number of single rooms is limited. The fee can be
paid cash at the reception desk of the school.
Pre-registered participants will be contacted to arrange the details of
their stay.

A number of grants will be available to partially cover the school fee:
applicants have to mark the specific field in the registration form.
Note that priority for the grant assignment will be given to applicants
with earlier registration date.

The school will be hosted by the Hotel Sporting in Teramo.

Details will be circulated together with the second announcement (at
early March).

Please check the web page for more details concerning the school venue
and the organization.
