Abstract:
MARCO POLO-R Meeting
#####################
the workshop "Scientific and technological aspects of
a sample return mission to a Near Earth Asteroid: the ESA Cosmic Vision M3
mission MarcoPolo-R" to be held on June 9-10 2011 at ESA-ESRIN in
Frascati (Rome)
(see the webpage: http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/ESRIN_SITE/SEMQPWY5D8E_0.html).

The workshop is aimed at discussing organizing the MarcoPolo-R study
activities within the International community of scientists, engineers and
industries, thus providing an opportunity for the wide planetary science
community to interact with the MarcoPolo-R Science Study Team, so as
to further
refine the mission's goals, its science drivers, the required instruments, and
the technological developments for the science payload.
In attachment, you can find the first announcement and the registration form.
Please fill in and send the form no later than April 30, 2011.

Please forward this e-mail to all colleagues who may be interested in
MarcoPolo-R.

We are looking forward to meeting you in Frascati.

##############
With this announcement, you are invited to attend the workshop "Scientific and technological aspects of a sample return mission to a Near Earth Asteroid: the ESA Cosmic Vision M3 mission MarcoPolo-R" to be held on 9-10 June 2011 at ESA-ESRIN Frascati (Rome).

MarcoPolo-R is a sample return mission to a Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA) studied within the ESA Cosmic Vision programme. MarcoPolo-R has been selected by ESA as part of the Cosmic Vision M3 programme, for an assessment study with launch in 2020-2022.
A total of 552 European scientists support the MarcoPolo-R proposal (see the website of the mission: http://www.oca.eu/MarcoPolo-R/).

Small bodies, as primitive leftover building blocks of the solar system formation process, offer clues to the chemical mixture from which the planets formed some 4.6 billion years ago.
Current exobiological scenarios for the origin of life on Earth invoke an exogenous delivery of organic matter: primitive bodies could have brought these complex organic molecules capable of triggering the pre-biotic synthesis of biochemical compounds on the early Earth. Moreover, collisions of NEAs with the Earth pose a finite hazard to life. MarcoPolo-R will allow us to study the most primitive materials available to investigate early solar system formation processes. Moreover, MarcoPolo-R will provide a sample from a known target with known geological context. Direct investigation of both the regolith and fresh interior fragments is also impossible by any means other than sample return. For these reasons, the exploration of such objects is particularly interesting and urgent.

The main goal of the MarcoPolo-R mission is to return unaltered NEA material for detailed analysis in ground-based laboratories, thereby obtaining measurements that cannot be performed from a robotic spacecraft (e.g. dating the major events in the history of a sample).

The Workshop is supported by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Rome Astronomical Observatory (INAF-OAR, Italy) and Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory (INAF-OAA, Florence, Italy).

Workshop objectives

The workshop objectives are to discuss and to organize the MarcoPolo-R study activities within international scientists, engineers and industries. We also invite presentations on the current state of asteroid research and sample analysis, addressing in particular the critical role played by NEA sample return missions, and presentations on possible payload elements, sampling requirements, mechanisms, curation and analysis facilities.

This workshop will provide an opportunity for the wide planetary science community to interact with the MarcoPolo-R Science Study Team, to further refine the mission's goals, its science drivers, the required instruments, and the technology developments for the science payload.

Moreover, this meeting will give us the opportunity to set up a number of working groups constituted by members of the community interested in MarcoPolo-R.

Proposed Programme

Importance of returned samples from small bodies in understanding Solar System origin and evolution
Relevant science of target objects
Evolution and physical properties of asteroidal regolith
Currently proposed sample-return missions - an overview
Relevant mission studies
International collaborations
Technical challenges for sample return
Discussion on Working Groups (e.g. Astrobiology, Curation, Laboratory analyses, Physical properties, Mechanical properties, Thermal properties, Instruments, Micro-Instrument...)

Logistics

The meeting will take place in ESRIN in Frascati (20 km south west of Rome), see the webpage: http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/ESRIN_SITE/SEMQPWY5D8E_0.html
The meeting will start on 9 June 2011 afternoon and will end on 10 June 2011 evening. A detailed agenda will be given later.

Participation

To organize our Workshop most effectively, we need to receive your response indicating your interest and possible participation.  To respond to this announcement and receive further information as it becomes available, please send the filled-in attendance form here attached. We strongly encourage participants to register as soon as possible. We would like to have your first response no later than 30 April 2011.
